The 2018 vintage is immediately recognizable for its palate coating texture - a familiar trademark of Ancien's Carneros Pinot Noir. In its youth is skews more to the spicy end of the spectrum with currants, orange spice and cocoa. The darker cherry and wild berry notes open with time in the glass and charactistic notes of anise. Subtle earth notes, hummus and truffles add interest as well as exotic hibiscus nuances. The wine finishes long and savory inviting the next sip. A versatile wine to pair at the table or to enjoy alone for its opulent andapproachable fruit.
Delightful aromatics are enhanced by a refreshingly mineral mouthfeel and lingering finish. A mélange of Asian pear and summer nectarine greet the nose, followed by subtler notes of fragrant white flowers, fresh Granny Smith apples, and tangerine zest. On the palate, citrus-kissed stone fruit complements star fruit and green apple leading to a lingering finish of peach and grapefruit. Pair this with grilled meats, seafood, pastas with olive oil or cream sauces, Asian cuisine...the combination of its rich mid-palate, smooth tannins, and acidic structure make this wine unusually versatile at the table.
Lightly spiced and fruity aromas of strawberry and bright cherry mix with hazelnut and fresh herbs as an introduction to this hedonistic blend of fresh fruit and earthy spice. The wine opens to a broad and soft mid-palate of black cherry, cassis, and fresh wild strawberry. The palate is elevated and brightened with a refreshing acidity that welcomes this wine to the table. The finish brings out dried flowers, fresh berries, sweet cranberry orange, allspice and cinnamon.
Over the next few years, development will keep revealing sensual subtleties hidden in layers beneath the robust fruit.
Classic Mink flavors of blue fruits, pomegranate, cherry notes, with hints of fresh herbs. Darker fruits blend with notes of cocoa to balance the bright juiciness of blueberry and plum. Fine, chalky tannins with a different feel than any New World Pinot we have encountered - we often call them "Italian tannins" perhaps owing to the volcanic origins of the soils. As it opens, the minerality becomes more and more apparent balancing the hedonism of the Mink fruit and beckons you in for another mouthwatering sip. Age in the bottle will reveal the underlying depth of this wine as it evolves and broadens on the palate. This wine delights upon release, but a recent 20-year vertical reveals it has staying power rare among Pinot Noir from any growing region.
Bright notes of Bing cherry, hints of rose petal and delicate spices dance above the glass. Hints of cinnamon, cardamom and anise follow below and echo on the palate. As the wine slowly opens up, the red berry fruit becomes increasingly generous as does the mid-palate notes of tea, and potpourri. The 2019 vintage will be best decanted in advance if enjoyed near term, or allow the wine additional bottle time as it continues to unfold greater richness and depth.
Fiddlestix always presents a bold Pinot Noir with notes of fruit and exotic spice. As the vines have aged, we noticed more and more underlying depth (they now are approaching their 25th vintage). The nose greets with notes of cassis, Indian spice, and hints of incense. Fresh dark fruits lead the palate, and the focus settles on ripe flavors of blackberry and currants spiced with peppercorn/allspice. Velvety and softly chewy tannins emphasize structure, while ever-present acidity balances and brightens. The spicy aromatics and flavors continue through the long finish.
