Notes of strawberry and tart pie cherry are accompanied by notes of sweet vanillin, toasted hazelnut and coffee as an introduction to this joyfully juicy blend of rich fruit and earthy spice. The wine opens to a well-integrated mid-palate of dark berries, toffee and cassis. The broad palate is elevated and brightened with a mouthwatering acidity that welcomes this wine to the table. Sassafras, herbal notes and baking spices are revealed in the satisfying finish.
A bold Pinot Noir with notes of fruit and exotic spice, this wine is enjoyable to drink now with plenty of life to give for years down the line. The nose greets with notes of watermelon, wet slate, and cassis. Fresh dark fruits lead the palate, and the focus settles on ripe flavors of blackberry and currants spiced with peppercorn. Velvety and softly chewy tannins emphasize structure, while ever-present acidity balances and brightens. The spicy aromatics and flavors continue through the long finish.
Delightful aromatics are enhanced by a refreshingly mineral mouthfeel and lingering finish. A mélange of Asian pear and summer nectarine greet the nose, followed by subtler notes of fragrant white flowers, fresh Granny Smith apples, and tangerine zest. On the palate, citrus-kissed stone fruit complements star fruit and green apple leading to a lingering finish of peach and grapefruit. Pair this with grilled meats, seafood, pastas with olive oil or cream sauces, Asian cuisine...the combination of its rich mid-palate, smooth tannins, and acidic structure make this wine unusually versatile at the table.
This vintage hits the palate in what can only be described as multi-dimensional ways, going beyond simply coating and reaching every corners of the senses. The delicate bouquet of geranium is dressed with racy whiffs of cinnamon and baking spices that seamlessly make their way into each sip. The juicy and generous palate is explosive with cherry and plum, both tart and sweet. Perfumes of oolong and chamomile tea linger in the senses and create an exotically floral foreshadow of the richer earthier notes to be revealed as fruit makes way for the deeper characteristics to shine over years in the cellar.
Expect to find deep aromas of cassis, black cherry, incense, dark chocolate, caramelized oak, toffee, and the Buoncristiani signatures of balance, depth on the mid palate, and a lengthy persistent finish. Precise amounts of Malbec and Petite Verdot were carefully folded into the final blend to add complexity and depth to the profile. Twenty months aging in 85% new French oak barrels rounded out the palate even further, while adding more texture, aroma and flavor.
Harvest timing was essential, allowing for full flavor development, acid balance, and optimum ripeness. Once the desired flavors were at their peak, the fruit was hand harvested in the early cold morning and gently whole cluster pressed. The juice was then slowly fermented by both native and specially selected yeast in a combination of new and twice used French oak barrels and small stainless steel drums. Upon dryness, weekly barrel stirring of the lees commenced to increase the complexity of the aromas and mouthfeel. Only 35% of the secondary malolactic fermentation was allowed, thus giving the final wine’s profile a beautiful balance between richness, intense fruit and crisp acidity in the long finish as we desired.
Opulent in every way beginning with a dark garnet-purple color & abundant dark fruit, cassis & chocolate on the nose. Following is mouth filling texture and depth as layers of aromas and expansive flavors of dark and blue fruit unfold with hints of black olives & tobacco all wrapped in chocolate notes. The 2017 Estate is a dance on your palate that ends with a long satisfying finish. This medium to full bodied wine has the richness, concentration and backbone to assure a long delicious life!
The 2017 Brothers Blend is a favorable introduction to the Ellman suite of wines. An instant favorite in any setting, it’s filled with aromatics of black cherries, cassis and star anise. The expansive palate ranges from freshly picked blackberries and boysenberries to dark chocolate and baking spice. With substantial heft yet refreshing acidity, it maintains a versatile style, pairing well with your favorite choice for the brai, be it ribeye or barbequed spare ribs, even Maitake mushrooms!
We aged the wine in Atelier Centre France and Chassin cooperage for 14-months with 50% new barrels. The Platt site, like Grand Cru Chablis sites, is expressive of the vineyard terrior and reflective of a balanced barrel regime. I believe in letting each site express itself and that means that each of our wines has a unique barrel program and wine chemistry that reflect that particular site in a given vintage.
The 2017 Flanagan Pinot Noir Platt Vineyard is a compelling expression of what is widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest vineyard sites in California. The wine has a brilliant color and the fruit character, despite the very cool site, is explosive. The nose offers a rich bouquet of ripe cranberry, cola, and a hint of spice. The palate shows very clean dark red fruit with a silky, persistent finish. Incredible acidity, a beautiful mouthfeel, and an incredible purity of fruit character make this a reference point wine.
